24-HOUR HOTLINE

A 24-HOUR HOTLINE is a telephone number usually operated by a central office of an area. It is usually answered by rotating volunteer members or groups who come to the central office to work a shift.

In Japan, Tokyo English AA has a hotline which connects to an answering machine which is checked daily. Then the telephone representative will call back, or delegates someone on a contact list to call back the person who left the message.

Nagoya English AA used to have a simlar hotline, but opted for a celcular phone which could be passed out to members of the telephone commitee on a rotational basis.

Okinawa English AA also used to have a hotline, but according to 12stepokinawa.com it is no longer in service.

With the increased proliferation of Email, the use of the hotlines has decreased slightly in recent years.
